Title: Hesitate to ask...
Post by: ginzadune on February 13, 2006, 08:30:24 pm
... but I have read about this bridging/integrating, and while there is a lot of info on how to implement it, and solve problems (both in the documentation, and here on these boards)--- I am having a hard time finding out what bridging/integrating does??

Mostly, I am just looking for a way for folks to be able to simply copy and paste an accurate usable link to the pics in the Galleries- some other photo storage places have those links readily available under the pic(s)... How can I achieve this?

Bridging simply gives a webmaster the ability to use his/her forum's member table instead of Coppermine's.  This means when people log into the forum, they are also logged into Coppermine.

Mostly, I am just looking for a way for folks to be able to simply copy and paste an accurate usable link to the pics in the Galleries- some other photo storage places have those links readily available under the pic(s)... How can I achieve this?

Permanent links to images are displayed under the images.

Permanent links to images are displayed under the images.

I am not seeing that. I see a simple thing like "59thOrdBdeCoin_Small.jpg"...

Is there something in config or elsewhere I need to change? This seems like is should be such an easy thing to do or turn on that I really know I am going to feel stupid about it when it is pointed out.

When viewing the intermediate image, click the information icon.  All image information is displayed, including a link to the image.

With some pics I simply get "Link: javascript:;" - and if I click on it, nothing...

What am I doing wrong that my "info" button does not have the right link in it???

Intermediate pics to me are the ones that are slideshow style... is that correct?

Post a link to your page, my guess is that you over-modified your custom theme

http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th (http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th)

Thanks for taking a look-

I have not modded Coppermine at all.

What I get when I look in the "info" part of the field is something like this:
Quote
http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th/displayimage.php?pos=-101

When what I need to post the image in the message is:
Quote
http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th/albums/userpics/10003/att635528.jpg

(I am using quotes on purpose here, and not img tags...)

Post a link to an info button that does not work. The absolute url is the one that looks like http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th/displayimage.php?pos=-179

I hope the post I just sent satisfies that...

I don't want the absolute URL, but rather the URL that will produce a pic in a message.

I know how to navigate until I get Coppermine to produce that URL, but my users are having trouble... I was hoping there was a "no brainer" way for me to have it display for them.

No brainer way is to know how to use your web browser. Right click on the pic and use 'copy link location' or something similar depending on what you use.

Yes- most of us know how to do that. Unfortunately, at some levels (including intermediate (photo)  levels) one gets :
"javascript:;"

The Browser being used is Safari-
Go to the test album I have set up... open the "Belgian Gate, then" pic to the itermediate level. Right click and select "Copy Image"
You will get "javascript:;"
Now try the same thing with the Coins- you will get "http://570thusaag.com/gallery4th/albums/userpics/10001/59thOrdBdeCoin_Small.jpg", which is an accurate, useable URL.

Internet Explorer:
Belgian Gate intermediate, right click, select copy link to clipboard, you get "javascript:;"
Belgian Gate intermediate, right click, select copy image, you get nothing.

On the coins, right click, select copy image, nothing.

My point is, "I" know that I have to force each pic to a different level of "open"; that is to say, I know that I won't always be able to get the postable URL without taking an extra step and opening the picture further sometimes- Sometimes if I "Copy Image" I get the URL, other times, I don't, and get "javascript:;", so I open the pic farther and see if the then works, and when it still doesn't, I then look up to the browser URL window and sometimes copy the info that is there... but it is inconsistent, nobody has explained to me why that is yet.

So- the no brainer approach would be to code a URL field that shows not an absolute URL reference ONLY at the bottom, but also the correct URL for posting between IMG tags, so that people can actually post the image into a messsage, and not just a URL that goes back to Coppermine. Both should be readily available, or easily achieved

You should see the instructions I have been writing to post so folks can figure out how to post pics without problems... it should not take nearly so many paragraphs to explain how to post a dang pic.

Hell, I have some people using photobucket just because it is easier... and since this is a military reunion site, that sure does not help me or the stie much to have those pics where others on the site cannot browse through them.

There are mods posted to display bbcode and the true pic url below the pic, search the board. I have access to neither safari nor IE so I can't duplicate your issue but it sounds like you are copying the link instead of the url of the pic itself.

Here is a work around for your members.  I too have some computer illitterate people and have to find a way for them to understand how to do something...

after clicking the thumb nail on the regular view picture right click on picture and click view.  this will put the picture in a new window with the correct url in the address bar.  just highlight the address bar and click copy.  I am pretty sure that my people would not ever click the info button so for them I would have to default it to remain always on if i did the mod to display the url.

I was in the process of doing something similar to that- posting a series of instructions- when I determined that every damn browser uses different words and has different options available for right-clicking. Pretty soon I was looking at a littany of paragraphs and screen shots... all just to get one freakin simple damn thing to happen that should be available more easily through the program.

I mean my God, how hard is it to do what the other free sites have done and just have an option in the control panel that allows you to turn on or off the actual URL?

I was going to mod it in, but thus far I don't believe I have received a response to that request (request being, where is that mod?).

At this point I am actually thinking about checking out the other photo service that is available from my host and seeing if IT has this feature built into it.

This is rediculous.

I said 'search the board', not 'demand that someone else search the board and then post the link for you'.

I did search the board. Then I asked, not demanded, in another post, if anyone knew what mod you were talking about. I even suggested a name of a mod and asked if that was the proper one.

As it turns out, I have found the (or "a") mod that seems to be doing the trick. Oddly enough, it encompasses 4 pages of dialogue, and many comments about how people would like to have such an option that is settable in their control panel- turn ON bbc link generation, turn OFF bbc link generation.

Better organization of mods would be nice. Something along the lines of how they do it at phpBBHacks...

Now one can see why I titled this post "Hesitate to ask"....

Oh look- my Karma is now -1... I probably will come back as a cow next life.

To make it harder for people with the same question to find your post when searching ?

If you would like to request a feature for a future version of Coppermine, please use the feature requests board.
