Title: Catagory Manager needs a new way to manage
Post by: Apologetic3x on December 19, 2005, 12:01:13 am
This is the biggest thing that I want to make a request about which is a much easier to manage Catagory Manager.....

here's the deal.....I have a cable modem so my internet connection is pretty fast.....I've had coppermine since spring 2004 and I've added a lot within the past year and a half.....I noticed on all of my coppermine galleries (I use 3 different ones), the more full the database gets, the slower and harder it is to add new catagories. I organize everything by the year (ex: 2006, 2005, 2004) and whenever I click to add a new cat or to edit it.....it takes almost 3 minutes for the page to come up....also when I add a new catagory and I want to put it in a certain order, after pressing the arrow up button, that's another 3 minutes......really its getting so slow....I just added 2006 to my gallery and of course it comes up like this

2005
2004
2006

but I want it like this
2006
2005
2004

Instead of having to post the new catagory and then press that arrow to position it to where i want it......I would like to request that you implement a new way to do it kind of similar to how Simple Machines allows you to re-order and modify boards on their forums.....where you create the catagory and then have a drop down box or something that asks do you want this to go before, after, or be the child of a certain board

when I create 2006 , I want it to ask me do I want it to go before or after 2005 for instance......that would add so many years to my life not having to wait forever to create it then have to move 3 or 4 times up to get it to the top. Some catagories I have go all the way back to 1999 so you can imagine when I want to add 2006.....having to move it through every year to get it to the top is painful......especially when its so slow

Perhaps,
but that still doesn't resolve the issue that your setup is so slow.

Maybe you should be looking at what is slowing down your coppermine installs or consider eliminating some of the queries that take place to speed up your installs instead of changing the way categories are managed? Since speed affects all users every minute of every day that they are on your site and moving a category up with an arrow is a once-a-category thing.

I'm curious.  How many pics are in your installs?

Also do a search for "Coppermine Lite" or "speed up coppermine"  I think there are a couple of threads on queries that could be removed/blocked for improved speed.

I would love it to be faster but that isnt as a big concern to me as it is to change how to add catagory....the move up and move down keys are a pain in the ass no matter what speed its going......its only made into a bigger pain when its slow......if it was set up like the example I gave from an SMF forum....it would be much more inviting to use. I have more files uploaded in one gallery than I care to announce.....but that's my request for future coppermine upgrades...

The albums manager is awesome.....It would be easier even if the catagory manager could be set up similar to that.....although that also has move up/down button, at least you can click on an already existing album and add a new album above or below that...

Apologetic3x, take a look at CPGOcat Orderable Category List (http://cpg-contrib.org/board/index.php?topic=81.0). I know it can't do what you ask for, but it may be of some help.

And if you ask Donnoman really nicely (on the CPGOcat feature request board), maybe he'll be able to add the feature you request. I hope he'll do it, as I also see it as a good feature to have if you have lots of categories. I hope CPGOcat makes it into the core code2 of CPG (as an admin option to use).
