Title: Multimedia messages via phone to Coppermine
Post by: snowfore on December 01, 2003, 01:14:23 pm
Hi

Any plans / add ons for a facility that would enable a registered user to email a photo taken with their MMS compatible mobile phone to the coppermine gallery?

This would be very useful from our point of view since we could add this facility to our snow report section on www.snow-forecast.com

Thanks

Nick

no, this is not planned (and I doubt it will be in coppermine, not even in the future).

That's a very definite answer! If people let me know that this may be of interest, I will write some scripts to do this

of course you're welcome to post any hacks! While MMS upload will probably not be part of coppermine mainstream, it may sure be available as add-on (if you or someone else is willing to share such a hack).

That would be SO cool - MMS is really beginning to take off in the UK where I'm based and we'd love to integrate this feature/are researching how it might be done.  Please let me know how you get on/how you do it!

That would be excellent.

We are in the process of developing an MMS addon for Coppermine and we currently operate an SMS/MMS gateway that delivers content to about 300+ operators.

We are having problems getting MMS connections at the moment, but the code is there to allow users to download/upload mobile content using Coppermine. Testing is ongoing but not final yet.

Anyone with an interest, please let me know.

A really bright idea! I'd love this feature!

It seems that we should vote about this feature  ;) ;)

voting won't help, coding will! :P
You need some sort of gateway to get pics from one net to the other (internet to cell phone net or vice versa). People who run such gateways get paid - they're usually big companies running a cell phone network. They differ from country to country, and so does the technology. Such a technology just doesn't go together very well with a free photo gallery software...
If you desperately need such a solution, find a free gateway for your cell phone net and check if they offer an api. If they do, post it here. If they don't, you're stuck...
This is not a question what you would like to have, but what will work... as long as millions of teenagers are willing to pay ridiculously high fees for ring tones, tiny mms pics that wouldn't have impressed me while I was toying with my Commodore 64, the mobile phone industry won't offer a free gateway to or from the internet, since this would ruin their method to make huge profits with virtually nothing...

the gateway wouldn't be the problem.
they can also send an mms to a specific email adress.
my idea ist that they send their mms to an email adress and they put thery username, password and picture name in the subject line. the picture by itself is the attachment.
if this works then this would be an easy solution.

some people programmed it for galler for phpnuke.

so i'm wondring if theres a similar script for coppermine ?

cheers

this requires a mail server that can receive emails - not everyone has got that enabled. I'll ask the devs from the cpg for nuke team howthey solved this issue...

you can basicly send an mms to any email adress straight from your mobile phone ...at least here in switzerland.

since we work together with the telcos and we have our own servers it wouldn't be an issue to receive email via phone.

i sent allreay some mms down to indonesia and it works fine.

i think the main advantage is the the user first has to register on the page and then can upload his pictures.

sure, the human with an email client on a pc can look at the email and the attachment, that's the way mms works, but you'll have to teach the server to look into a pop3 mailbox... This requires coppermine to have a mail client.

Hmmm... Photo Upload via email - a very interesting idea :)

OK if any one wants to code it here are some tips....

First:
I believe that an email gateway is the best way to integrate MMS and Coppermine.

Then my 2 cents...
I have previously analyzed and compared a bunch of Troble Report handling systems. Almost all of them have an "email client" written in PHP. You configure mailbox information (typically POP-server, user and password). When the "email client" is activated (via cron or admin web interface) the mailbox content is fetched, emails are parsed and analyzed for relevant information and appropriate actions are taken.

I believe that such an architecture could serve as a solution in order to integrate MMS and Coppermine.

BTW, what I have described is really not "MMS integraton", but an "email integration". The "email integration" can in turn be used for MMS application integration with Coppermine.....

What you are suggesting depends on the script being run periodically - this way the
1) The update is not prompt enough
2) You have to go thru an extra step and a greater server resource / setup

did anybody worked at this request? i want to add this feature on my website too and started playing around with the imap-functions of php. what i have now is a script that checks an email account for mails with a jpg as an attachmentent and encodes it. now it has to be transfered to coppermine. for the start it can be a public album with no user/pass check. can i work with some code wich comes with coppermine and where can i find it?

thanks for help

edit: ok, i found http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=5081.0 and it seems i need t take a look at picmmt.inc.php

Users of photo.net.ph have been asking me when this service will be up because they all want to post their silly photos online..

i know of one photo site that tried it out but they stopped doing it because of the cost of mms was very prohibitive..
