Nukeworker sent this PM:
Is it safe to create a 1.4 theme at this point?
[...]
I only ask because I've been putting a lot of time into the 1.3 theme on my site... and I know 1.4 is just about finished. I'm trying to decide if I should just wait and work on 1.4 later, work on it now, or keep working on 1.3.
There won't be additional features in cpg1.4.x, we decided to have a feature freeze, so I guess it's pretty safe to start working on a theme for cpg1.4 now (make sure that you have the most recent cvs checkout), but don't sue me if there are minor changes in the theming engine from now on untill the release.
Please keep in mind that
a) cpg1.4.x isn't being recommended for use in a production environment
b) cpg1.4.x goes unsupported untill we release a stable version
(I couldn't post in the CPG 1.4 Testing/Bugs forum.)
In the future, when refering to cpg1.4, please post on the board (any sub-board you're allowed to post in is just fine, a moderator will move the thread accordingly - just make sure to say in your posting that you're refering to cpg1.4).
Also, at what point in its developement is it? Beta or rc1?
The package that went out as cpg1.4.0 is "alpha", the next package (which hasn't been released yet) will be cpg1.4.1 "beta". We consider the current code in the cvs (devel branch) to be in "beta stage".

Thanks Joachim,
I think I'll wait for the official Beta Package.
BTW, I think the mini-cms add-on is way-cool, and the behind the scenes features of 1.4 are fantastic.

How long do you think it will be before a stable version is released? A couple weeks/months?
cpg1.4.x is going to be awesome, it has everything that will make the gallery on my site perfect. ;D
Oh, do you have any idea of about how much a license for it will cost?

Given that the beta version has yet to be released, followed by the consequent testing and fixing period, it can't be measured in weeks. It could go by much faster if we had more people helping out with the testing and fixing. Even helping out by answering easy support questions. It frees up time for the developers to develop.

Basically, coppermine is free (as in "free speech" as well as in "free beer") as long as you respect the license that comes with it.

So 1.4 has the same features as CPG1.3? I'm sure I read somewhere that it would have new functions. *now confused* sorry!

This means there won't be any more features added to 1.4 from now on. There are already lots of features that have already been added to 1.4 and once the bugs are fixed then there will be a release. A feature freeze means we stop adding new things and work on making it more stable instead.

Sorry about the 'doh' question. I understand it much better now - thanks Nibbler! :)
