Title: Coppermine Perfomance
Post by: red_blood on December 01, 2004, 06:23:04 pm
Has anyone done any benchmarking and what-not to see what Coppermine can handle? what's the CPU usage, how many connections an hour can it handle, etc etc.

There has been no explicit benchmarking, but in fact coppermine is not the bottleneck, but you mySQL database is. There are installs with 100,000+ in the database.

Currently still reuploading pics but when the gallery was/is fully loaded once again its about 7000 pics
on a dual blade server, a 2500 if iirc.

I asked the server admin once what the load was after a camp took place and it was negliable according to him.
The gallery stores pics from various camps and events for ScoutLink, irc network for scouts, and normally
after a event or camp everybody goes looking at the pics.

All reports that i got back from users are good. Speedy delivery of all pics at all times. Same goes on cpu load which
is not majorly higer all of a sudden.

Only way i could know that there were many viewers was that my ftp connection slowed down a bit ;) but that's
also not worth mentioning really.

CPG is imho a very well coded gallery. But that's just my own opinion ofcourse. Depends on what kind of server your
being hosted on etc..

Hi Joachim,
I tried to search for cgp-examples with such a lot of images for a long time. Until now without sucess, I found allways "only"  a fraction of 100.000 images. I would be great, if you could give some examples or a thread or a url.
I did really search, maybe wrong.
Best wishes from Switzerland

As Joachim pointed out it is not cpg which is the bottleneck but the MySql database which stores and serves the
pictures to the visitors.

So I think your better of at a MySql support board to ask what the maximum load is that a MySql database can handle at any given time.

Yes, I have understand this. But I would wonder to see some of such large cpg-systems. Not only related to the performance. I tried to search and search and search ... and found maximum some cpg-galleries with under 10'000 images, far away from the 100'000, what Gaugau spoke.

I must be a very bad searcher, I guess ...

We did have one with 400,000, which was a university students union site in Taiwan, which was done by Oasis.
They eventually changed their setup so much it was no longer coppermine, and it became a commercial outfit.  But if you search for oasis's profile, you should find a link to the site.

Hey, thanks a lot.
Though it is in chinese letters, it seems interesting.
They seem to have about 40'000 images - roughly.

that's because they started over from scratch afaik. They used to have at least 200,000+ pics (that's the highest number I can remember) and ten thousands of members (causing huge traffic). With numbers that high you need to make up your mind on clustering and load balancing, just because a single server setup isn't capable of handling such high numbers. Coppermine hasn't explicitely been developed nor tested for such setups, but can be modified to work in such environment (at least that's what Oasis said). I'm sorry, that's all I can say.

Hi Joachim,
That is enough information for me, thanks a lot for your answer.
I have just started to use cpg and I am to explore all the possibilities. I had a lot of help from a cpg-user (Klaus, ks), I guess, without him I would have had (sorry for my English) much more troubles to get a fine running cpg.
As soon as it is in a better shape, I will give here on the forum the url.
Thanks for a great product!

Markus / Switzerland

PS: just now first I try to find a new provider/hoster with more webspace (about 10 GB)

We are running CPG with about 38000 pics. No performance probs!!! Only a little bit with random pics, but not really dramatic !!

Thanks for your report. The random pics generate a high strain on the server if your database becomes that large, that's why we recommend turning random pics off for galleries the size of your page. Could you post a link for reference as well please?

Joachim

oops, the link is already there :-[ - sorry for being thick, I guess I just had a blonde moment.

I'm sure hiding the powered by coppermine footer made it a lot faster too.

And no claim of accidental colour clash here, the actual link, when you can find it is very small, the words powered by are small, and the coppermine is totally unreadable.
