Title: Cannot create thumbnail or resize image
Post by: welshjess on May 17, 2008, 03:10:57 pm
I've just installed a new gallery at http://totallykt.com/photos

but when I go through the batch add process, I just get this error. My first thought was space, but this isn't a problem since before installing I moved the site to it's own server.

I know it says to create a test account, for help, but how do I do this? I'm happy to PM someone my details since there are no files in the gallery at the moment.

I have no problem with any of my other fansite galleries, all of which use the latest coppermine and stramm.

Any help is appreciated.

What was the error you received with debug mode switched on?

No thats the debug output, is there not an error message below the "Cannot create thumbnail or resize image"?

Nope, that's all it says.

I'm having the exact same problem.  It goes all the way through the batch add process and then when it usually gives the "OK" image, it says to click for details and then just says, "Unable to create thumbnail or reduced size image."  When I try to upload it manually using the "Upload file" link, it still doesn't let it go through, and says "Error Message: Impossible to move."

@welshjess: do exactly as suggested in the docs, sections "upload troubleshooting" and "asking for support on upload issues"

@ucillian: then do exactly as I told welshjess. Do so in your own thread.

@just_some_guy: I appreciate your readiness to help, but please do as all the other supporters do: tell users who don't come with the correct information to read the docs and do as suggested there. Everything else will result in discussions similar to the one that is already taking place here: the thread starter didn't understand your instructions and posted debug_output although he mustn't. This dissussion is leading nowehere: in the next step, you'll have to ask him for a link to his gallery. Then you'll have to ask him for a est user account. Then you'll have to ask him to enable single file uploadfs for the test user account. Finally, you'll have all needed information and will be ready to see the actual error message. That's the point when you will be able to actually help, not before. In the meanwhile, you will have had to type a lot, and the thread starter will get frustrated why this is taking so long. Believe me: I have lead this discussion before countless times already - it is very time-consuming and frustrating. Therefor, please do as I suggested above: tell users to do as suggested in the docs, because there they will find all information they need what they need to do to set up their gallery properly for us to look into their issues. We definitely need a link to their page (as they might be using an outdated version, have an issue in their theme) and of course we need to test uploading for them. We definitely need the non-admin test user account for test uploading, as explaining them how to savely allow guest uploads takes much more effort. We definitely need users to enable single file uploads, as only then we'll be able to see the actual error message and advice what is wrong.
Please don't get me wrong: as I initially said, I really appreciate your readiness to help. I'm just trying to keep you from getting frustrated with the effort it takes to take the full quiz of advice and reply that will take place if you don't tell users what you need in the first place.

Joachim

Ok, I'm sorry for my questions. I think I've done everything that is asked, and the test account is:

username: test
password: test

I still don't get a detailed message though, and I'm sorry if I seem inexperienced, but I have several websites, all upgraded, and this is the only one I'm having problems with.

I attempted to login to test the single file upload but your gallery is offline, nobody can test anything - please put it online.

Done!

I can replicate that error  -

Quote
Critical error
The file 'albums/userpics/upload.jpg' can't be inserted in the album

Unable to create thumbnail or reduced size image.

File: /home/totallyk/public_html/photos/db_input.php - Line: 451

Note, you are aware that is an Admin account you posted. I am not as experienced as other supporters, but usually the file gets uploaded to a sub directory of userpics/ such as albums/userpics/10001/. I suggest your review the CHMOD settings for the albums/ , edit/ and userpics/ directories.

I'll try that. I was aware it was an admikn account yes, and since there are no files I thought it was safe.

No, it's not safe to post an admin account. Anybody could upload a backdoor to your server and take over the server now (or later). Make the test user account a regular non-admin user account and change all your passwords.
As suggested, make sure to set permissions as suggested in the docs (section "permissions").
