First, is the /albums directory and all directories in it set to 777?  Use your FTP program to change them, if needed.  Is there a directory called edit in the /albums directory?  If not, create it and CHMOD it to 777.

Try to avoid any special characters in your file names: spaces ( ) ~

Is this problem happening when you batch add images or when uploading a single file as a normal user?  If you are the admin, you should FTP your images into the /albums directory, in a new directory you created (call it uploads or something), then use the batch add feature to add your pictures.
