Alright, I've been looking through the docs and ofcourse have some questions.
I am currently using SMF as my bbs. In SMF the possibility is given to allow your cookies onto any place on your domain (so 1 cookie works at forum.domain.com and www.domain.com/forum/)
I haven't tried this yet but I'm fairly certain I'll run into a huge heap of trouble and it'll be a lot more work repairing everything changed than asking here, but is it possible that coppermine running on gallery.domain.com will recognize that cookie from forum.domain.com? Or is the entire deal entirely out of the question?

Another thing:

It is also recommended that you use the same database for your board and Coppermine (in fact it is even mandatory!).
So you're absolutely certain this is mandatory? Because the sentence is to pretty easily misunderstood imho...

there's a workaround for phpbb, but it's recommended to keep them on the same db.

You can bridge across subdomains, you'd just need to make changes to the bridge files and get the board setup right. SMF integration can be run from 2 different databases, but that is not the case for all the bridges, and adds complexity.
