This is my first time installing something like this. What did I do wrong?

Please give the full error message, what setup you are using, etc.

Did you get any other error, such as a parse error.

Have you modified anything in the code, including in the themes folder?

ok, it seems you may have a corrupt file.  try re-uploading your themes folder first, and see if that helps.
