Downloading Albums
« on: June 30, 2009, 01:09:10 am »

Greetings,

I have recently been looking into a server move. However when I go to download the entire coppermine directory to my harddrive (as is apparently required), it says there are over 27,000 files that need downloading. This will total 18-20 GB. - Obviously this is far too large for me to store.

As such, I will instead simply download each individual Album from my Coppermine install, to save my Harddrive from such an overhaul of files.

----------

Having said this, after I download each Album, the Album is filled with 'thumbnails' 'regulars' and then the 'full size' Images, making an Album that should normally have 400 Images, contain 1200, because of all of these duplicates.

----------

My question is this: If I upload this Album, containing all of the thumbnails, regular and full-size Images (that coppermine created on its own), into the new server, will Coppermine make thumbnails of the thumbnails, etc, or will the Album be displayed like it is on my server now.

Thank you,

Will be displayed like it is on your server now.

Coppermine can re-create the thumbnails and intermediate images if you decide not to copy them over to your new server, but only copy the full-sized images if you instruct coppermine to do so, using the corresponding selection from the admin tools. Please read up the documentation that comes with coppermine - the admin tools are being explained there. However, what you're up to do is not a bright idea for several reasons:
  • You'll have to babysit the backup process, which will be very time-consuming
  • The transfer time and storage space used is mainly being consumed by the full-sized image - the thumbnails nearly don't eat up any space at all (compared to the full-size).
  • You need to perform frequent backups anyway, so you'll need to perform the backup anyway
  • It's quite likely that you will fail to backup some files (humans make mistakes), which will result in a loss

This being said I strongly suggest to perform a full backup. It's recommended to use an advanced FTP tool that is capable of resuming where it stopped or the connection broke.
