hi, i would like to change the text links of these to image links, is this possible? and if it is where is the code hidden for the sys_menu & sub_menu

Take a look at how this can be accomplished. There is an example for this that ships with coppermine: take a look at the hardwired theme (themes/hardwired/theme.php).
