How do you find anything on this forum?
« on: April 02, 2004, 11:48:19 pm »

Sorry to be critical on my first visit to the forum, but 1 category for support?
I've just installed and think the program is great and need to get some answers to various areas; templates, design, etc., but everythings in one big pile.
Can't you section it off so that we can go to the relevant area instead of ploughing through 48 pages?

We use the "Search" facility

We rely on phpBB's search facility, which admittedly isn't the best.
When you have a question, try searching by using 'AND' to include all words in the search, like 'imagemagick AND error AND 127', would give results relevant to that error.

But if a search like that still leaves you lost, then please post a question.  We only get irate when people obviously haven't tried to look for themselves, for something that has been answered many times.

There will be different support categories in the future - we're thinking about moving the board to another platform (SMF). The problem lies in the users asking questions here: most don't care for categories and post in the board that is shown at the very top of the screen, no matter what their question deals with. Having different categories will require the moderators to do more work.

gaugau: Moving to SMF is probably a good idea (use it myself).
The SMF team don't seem to have too much trouble with postings in the wrong categories and they do get a lot of posts.

jmc: Search? That would never have crossed my mind.

casper: I think thats a problem with the search functions of a lot of the popular boards.

Obviously.   I also considered replying to your post subject tag

with "Board FAQ", but I considered "Search" to be a more specific answer to your problem.  :) ...
OK... joking aside... there is no suitable smiley for "Insert wry grimace after comment", so my (short) message lost it's meaning. I wasn't having a dig at you. Gaugau has hit the nail right on the head. Users will stick stuff in the first place they can. Despite being repeatedly warned off! And subject etc headers like "HELP ME!" don't improve matters. Splitting the Board up into more specific areas for posts could help, but it may just make it more of a nightmare for already busy Moderators. So, generally, it's "Search and plough"!
