IM looking though the admin section and I have set up 3 categories where photos can be posted, how ever is there a way to block guests from going to a certain album/category and requring them to register? but not block all albums/categories ?

not per category, but per album. Check the album properties that exist in the category you want to hide from guests and set

but unfortunately I have no line on my modifyalb.php page, which matches your description. I have only 3 lines to configure in permission: one about the upload, the comments and the rates.

Where is this "Album can be viewed?"

By the way, I'm running coppermine version 1.2.1

In config, set 'users can have private albums' to yes, then you should see this box.

you can still prevent users having albums in the groups settings.
