oh yes? You don't have a program on your client that is set to open php files by default?
Look: coppermine is a web server application - it's supposed to run on a server, and there are minimum requirements the webserver has to fullfill: one of them being PHP. I guess this application is not meant for you.
If you just want to have a look at the code, you can open the php files with any text editor, but this won't help you, I promise...

You do not need to open the php files, just put them on a suitable server and follow the instructions in the documentation.

You can learn more about PHP by visiting www.php.net.

Also, go to a good bookstore's computer section, and you will find 10 or more books on Apache, PHP, and MySQL.
