Afraid to upgrade 1.2 to 1.4

My 1.2 installation broke down.  I am getting the

Impossible to move frankablies-001a.jpg to albums/userpics/10001/ !

File: /home/httpd/vhosts/rconj.com/httpdocs/gallery/db_input.php - Line: 259

I understand there is no longer support for 1.2.

Will a clean install to 1.4 likely rectify this?  I need to make sure I properley back everything up so I can re-enable or my friend will literally destroy me.

Instead of performing a fresh install, why don't you do an upgrade instead?
