Unable to delete albums

The problem is, the instructions tell me to pick a category from the drop-down menu but - here's what happened:

When I first installed 1.4.8 and started to create albums, I stupidly did not create categories, so they all ended up in Admin, in the User Gallery.  I have since seen the light and have created categories and albums.  I have uploaded pictures and put them in their proper albums which, in turn, are in their proper categories.

So, I tried to go into the the aforementioned User Gallery and delete the unwanted albums from there but I get the following error:

Critical error
Directory 'albums/userpics/10001/' is not writable, files can't be deleted  

Any suggestions?

Apply permissions (CHMOD!) as suggested in the docs then. The error message clearly says that coppermine can't delete those files because of missing permissions.
