I've just tried to update my 1.2.1 gallery to 1.4.8. I ran the update scriopt OK but now i get this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: ob_clean() in /gallery/include/init.inc.php on line 153

where do I go now as I can't even log in?

I am about to move this site to a new server: would it be useful  - or even possible - to do a clean install and then overwrite the tables with the sql dump from the old version?

- board has "one question per thread" rule

your PHP version is under 4.2.0
CPG 1.4.8 need (PHP 4 >= 4.2.0)
check php version of new server

@dev team:please update it (PHP 4 >= 4.2.0):What is required

It was one question - I was wondering if moving the site would solve the problem!

I obviously failed to read the requirements properly before upgrading and yes, the new server has a later version of PHP, so I guess the answer is yes :)

Yes, and there is a code fix posted already for this issue if you search the board.
