That's because you didn't update properly, you need to make sure you replaced all the files with new versions from the package. If you search for your error message then you will find a workaround until you can fix it properly.

You're probably refering to Fantastico or similar crap. Don't use it in the future, but update using the package from our site, following the instructions we provide.

The upgrade process will not delete the photos. Just make sure to backup and follow instructions carefully.
