After following the documented instructions, when I try to navigate to the album, I am being forced to login (new) and after I enter the only login (I checked id and password in phpmyadmin) I get this error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in E:\WEBSITES\naperweb.com\photos\login.php on line 37
PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in E:\WEBSITES\naperweb.com\photos\login.php on line 37

This is a test album as I am extremely leary of attempting an upgrade of a live photo album after the difficulties encountered on this test databse.

Make sure you uploaded all the new files, replacing the old ones.

Yes, I did that of course. Manually went to each folder and made sure all new files overwriting old ones.
Like I said, this is my third attempt.

Well, alrighty, then.
I am just deleting this test system completely, copying my live photo album over and testing on that.
I am going to follow the documented instructions AGAIN and see what happens this time (number 4)
wish me luck, I'm goin in again!

4th time is a charm.
Instead of following the documentation this time, I tried something different and it worked.

I DELETED all files except the albums folder.
Uploaded 1.4.4 files.
Ran update.php
except for a few theme issues, I am back in business!

moral of the story?
Backup everything, then try the documented instructions, then try something similar to documented instructions, then try something a bit different from that and maybe you can get updated to the latest version!

boy, was that fun.

That seems to indicate maybe an issue with the ftp client not overwriting the old files properly?

It could be, but I tried two different FTP clients and specifically indicated overwrite all on both.
I really think either the documentation should be changed or the upgrade process itself.
A LOT of folks have had difficutly with this, and I don't think they are all just making stupid mistakes.
Sorry, I am spoiled with simplemachines forum software, a couple clicks inside the software itself, bam! upgraded.
