Backup tgz

I recently messed up an upgrade of a coppermine-gallery and would like to know how to unzip the backup file tgz into my folders. Also can you please tell me how to untar a file.

not related to coppermine at all. You need to find an application that can handle the archive filetypes you refer to. On Windows, you could use 7zip, Winzip, PowerArchiver or similar. On Lunix machines, support for those files should be built-in.
