How do I restrict access to only thumbnails?

Hello, I've been to some sites that have galleries where guests can only access the thumbnail and normal size images -- so the intermediary pic is not clickable. Does anyone know how to do that?

Forgive me if this is a basic/dunce question. I'm in a bit of a time crunch, and am using this forum as a helpful resource/avenue for reaching a solution. Thank you in advance.
