defining a sorting order
« on: September 18, 2005, 10:28:48 am »

Hey!

A few days ago I started using coppermine and I like it a lot so far. I plan to recommend it to my customers also, but in order for them to use it, I need one problem fixed: I need a way to tell coppermine the order in which the images in an album should be shown, and also the order of the albums. Ordering by name or date is nice, but not always right.

For example, I tried out coppermine with pictures of my last vacation. These pictures have a chronological order, first the trip to Sweden, then on to Denmark, then back home. Now if I don't upload the pictures in that order, but for example some from Denmark first, then I find no way to get them in the right, chronological order. Also, if I later decide to create an album for my earlier vacations, I can't get coppermine to get the albums in the correct order.

Either I didn't find that option or I need a mod that makes this possible. Any hints for a newbie?

Snorri,

Why not create a parent category  i.e. Our Vacation 2004
Add albums that will list below the category:     Sweden, Denmark,
Sort these albums by clicking the Album Button in Admin Mode, and s
electing one of the albums and moving it up or down as need be?

This will at least give your users an organized format to view your pictures.

As for sorting them chronologically in each album, I'm afraid that's a bit more complicated and requires a mod/hack.   You can read the post regarding this hack at:

Hey madeinhawaii,

thanks for your link. Sorting by EXIF date was another thing I was looking for, actually, but what I need most is an interface that lets me define the sorting order manually. For example, I took pictures of many mushrooms in Sweden (why? because they looked pretty! ;) ), but at more than one occasion. If I don't move them all into one album, there is no way I can get them all together if I sort by EXIF date.

This is a new feature in the next version of Coppermine (1.4) and there is a mod posted for 1.3.x on the mods board.

I was hoping for that answer  ;D

Could you give me a link to that mod? I used the search function yesterday, but using "sort order" as a search string returned hundreds of hits containing SQL statements ;)

How stable is version 1.4? Should I use 1.3 with the mod or give 1.4 a try already?

Thanks!
