Editing Appearance (Server Question)

This will probably be obvious/basic to many,  but I am new to PHP/server tech etc....  very advanced in other areas though :) ;)

Have successfully got this up and runnning (well done to developers....  )  A far cry from wasting a day trying to install "Gallery"

I am wanting to edit some of the content and have read how to do that and and will later be delving into IPTC and EXIF (I customerise XMP panels to create new and Hijack existing fields for images etc, so this end is ready to find the right application to use thist... but I digress)

How do I preview what I am editing (I use Dreamwaver) and server is with webhost. Can I set up my computer so I am able to preview what I am doing (without using 'testing server' that is external.)

I am assuming that I need to have a server application on my system (internal or external drive).....  not sure what or how so any guidance would be appreciated... then I will be up and running.

Appache2 Triad.  One step installation/config.  (Apache, SQL and PHP4)
