Where does CP store the image files once they are uploaded and put into their destination category/album?

Reason for question:

I create an upload folder inside the Albums directory and then upload my files by FTP; then I use Batch Upload to place those images in the final category/album where I want them.  OK - can I now delete the files in the Albums/uploadfolder?  Has CP copied these files into the mysql database (or elsewhere)? or does CP leave the image files in the directory where they were originally uploaded and then point to them? (If I delete the originally uploaded files will I be deleting the basic (only) copies CP maintains of them?

Sorry if this is a naive question....  (I'm trying to keep the disk usage on my domain-server down to the minimum necessary, obviously.)

They remain where you uploaded them; you should not delete them via FTP. The db only keeps track of the path to the images.
