I have the latest stable version, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to upgrade to the beta version?   Would I just overwrite the files in FTP upload?

You update the files and then update the database. There are full instructions in the download.

As it's written in the docs,an upgrade is easy to do.Just read the manual
Personally,I managed to upgrade from 1.3.3 to 1.4 easy on a machine,but impossible on another.Did the same thing,but on the second server a "Fatal error" occurs .. Hopefuly the final 1.4 release will fix this.

I tried to post that on the adequate thread (meaning CPG 1.4 bugs),but I don't have the permission to post there ..so maybe I'll stick it here ?

you should be able to post there now (the bugs board used to be locked for "regular users" as suggested in the sticky thread, but we opened it for new posts after releasing the beta). However, if you can't post there, post your report here (in a new thread), with as many information as possible, so we're able to reproduce the error.
