error message when i try to install

when i go to install.php and fill out the information for the database username and all that and press "lets go"
i get this:

Could not create a mySQL connection, please check the SQL values entered

MySQL error was : Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

Search the forums and try Google.
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
