Storing thumbnails and other renders seperate from pictures in album directory

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to store the thumbnails, etc pictures seperate from the actual album directories... I have a repository of pics which are on DVD and I do not want to copy to the album directory just link them in, but thumbnails, etc are not writeable :)  Any ideas?
