Subcategories not synched?

Hello, firstly thanks VERY MUCH for Coppermine.  I hope you can help me please.

In the album manager I select a primary category in the drop down menu and it doesn't show the two subcategories I have created but a seemingly eroneous one titled (at first) "Category 1".  I'm unable to delete this eroneous category (only rename it). The eroneous category doesn't show in the primary album list shown to the users, either.  Also I am unable to transfer any photos to any of the actual subcategories (I have two at the moment).  Also when I batch add a photo, only the single primary category shows in the drop down menu that I have titled "Fine Art Photography".

Can you advise me please?
