Ho to upgrade from coppermine 1.4.20 to 1.4.21
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:54:49 am »

Hi there

As requested, I am putting my new question I asked in http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=59020.new;topicseen#new in a separate topic.

How do I upgrade from coppermine version 1.4.20 to 1.4.21?  I have looked all round he documentation and this forum and can't see it.

I have that current problem with bridging on the topic I mentioned above, so shoudl I fix that or this first?

Thank you

Bev

I have found the upgrade details now actually - http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,58309.0.html

But it says to back up first - how do I do that?

Yes yes I know... point taken.  :)

However, I can't see in there HOW to back up.  I did say, I need basic step by step instructions as I have very little experience of code.  Please help on that?

Backup your include/config.inc.php file, your anycontent.php file and your "albums" directory.

That's not even coding.. that's basicly going to FTP and downloading the mentioned files and folders to a folder on your laptop/desktop.

That's amazing. I wonder how Hein managed to find it so easily if your haven't although your search must have been very hard. He must have super-powers... ::)

I do actually but just don't tell anyone.. oh darn.. just forget you ever read this  ;D

@bev: just read the documentation and do what is told there. Copy the file config.inc.php frpm the include folder. Copy the anycontent.php file and last but not least make sure you have a copy of the album directory on your pc or at least make real sure not to overwrite the folder whiel perform the upgrade.

I'll have a go thanks.

I know you all probably get very fed up of people asking the same questions over and over again, but it makes me nervous to do changes to sites that many people use a lot, so I am just trying to be sure I do things right.  Your sarcasm actually doesn't help at all - and it makes me feel stupid.

Like I said, I get why you feel that way and I should have searched harder but is a little empathy before you bite too much to ask?

A little sarcasm never hurt anyone.. just don't doubt yourself when reading the docs. It says pretty clearly what needs to be done when upgrading, follow it by the letter and you should be okidoki. It never hurts to ask questions but like you said yourself some question do get asked again and again and again  ;)

Prepare by reading the docs. Make a nice backup and perform the upgrade as described in the docs. Good luck.

Should I mention backing up the database ???

Maybe use this

http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,40439.0.html

or this if your host doesn't provide phpmyadmin

http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,58906.0.html

Though I am sure Hein would have used his super telepathy powers to tell you that ;)

I have backed up the databases, and copied the files you mention above to my PC.

I have gone to the download page and checked the upgrade instructions in the documentation -

Which one of the files do I download:

cpg1.4.21.tar.bz2    3207321 644 Platform-Independent Source .bz2
  cpg1.4.21.tar.gz    3998150 376 Platform-Independent Source .gz
  cpg1.4.21.zip    4288151 24920 Platform-Independent

Or do I need all three?

They are the same thing in different compression formats. Download whichever you prefer. Probably .zip if you run windows.

Thanks done that in zip.

I have unpacked the file and am in the process of uploading the files to my Control Panel File Manager, overwriting those of the same name.  Is there a quicker way of uploading all the individual files though as there are 819... My Control Panel doesn't seem to let me upload folders or multiple files ... this will take ages...

Use your FTP app. Do not use some silly web uploader control panel app to upload files.

Then get one. Read up "Tools recommended by the devs". We can't teach you such basic aspects of running a website of your own - don't expect to be spoon-fed: if you don't understand things, don't be lazy and ask right away, but perform a search first. We assume that you try to find the solution first on your own. At least show us that you have tried. In this case, you clearly haven't even tried, as you typed your answer only one minute after my reply.

OK FTP is ace.  I am learning lots.

I had asked what it was because you mentioned it like it was part of what I already had.  I will cut you some slack for your lack of customer service skills because I have some German friends whose english comes over as as tactless and rude but its not meant to be, it is just a more 'direct' language.

It makes me nervous to ask any further questions on this forum, in case you jump down my throat again but hey, that's your intent to make sure people don't bother you with what you think are stupid questions, right?  Surely the world of IT should be kept exclusive anyway, and no-one should learn new skills who doesnt already have a certain standard of knowledge.

Thanks for the underlying advice anyway, lets hope the rest of the upgrade goes as well as it has so far.
