Support for 1.4.x to cease soon
« on: August 19, 2010, 11:19:33 pm »

After many moons of faithfull service the time has to come when we wave goodbye to Coppermine 1.4.x. With the new all singing 1.5.x line we feel we have the best, fully featured and secure package we can have. With a small support team we can only realistically spend time on supporting the latest version. As such we have decided to give you all plenty of notice that we will lay the 1.4.x line to rest.

When?

1st December 2010 is the sad date. From then on we will close all the 1.4.x support forums to new threads.

What do we do as website owners?

That is your choice. Coppermine 1.4.x will not stop working after that date. Having said that, should you run into any problems you will unfortunately be on your own. Additionally, there will be no security updates available so you run the risk if new exploits are discovered.

Upgrading is easy and there are very few reasons not to upgrade to the 1.5.x line.

What should I do as a plugin/theme developer?

If you've built a plugin or theme then thank you for all your hard work and your contribution to the Coppermine community. We urge you to continue your efforts and update your work to be compatable with 1.5.x. In many cases a few simple code changes are all that is required while some others may require a little more time.

Even if you are not the author of a particular piece of work and have the skills then we would love you to assist in porting to the new version. All input is greatly appreciated whether it is a new plugin or theme, an update of someone elses, a new language file or anything else that will be of use to the community.

What about mods?

There is nothing to stop you from creating mods but with a new plugin engine we would prefer you to think about the implementation of your mod. In 99% of cases a mod can be replaced with a plugin. Where this cannot be achieved we are willing to accept suggestions for new plugin hooks to enable your mod to become a plugin. If you need help, please ask on the forum and we will do our best to help.

We have enjoyed our time with 1.4.x and hope you have too. We wish all the community every success with your new 1.5.x websites.
