Trouble Updating from 1.35 to 1.42
« on: December 03, 2005, 11:02:38 am »

OK, now trying to describe my problem in the best English I am able to write. (Native language German)

Yesterday I noticed that a new version has been released of my favourite gallery. Because I'm using Coppermine since 1.2x (don't know exactly) I thought that I know how to upgrade the gallery (the last upgrades went all successfull.
So I followed the instructions (BackUp MySQL Database / Albums Directoy / config.inc.php & anycontent.php files). Than uploaded all the new files exept of the files named before. Edit folder has been in the Albums directory (755).
Then updated the files and everything seems to be ok.
Version Check brought my first shock. Mostly red and the rest yellow, no green. http://www.don-duracell.de/pics/pic1.jpg (File does not exist / File does not exist [optional File])
Tried to upload the files again but nothing changed.

After that I tried to get into my gallery, with Success. But all german umlauts such as "öüäß" are show a bit different. For example Großstück has become to Gro߳t?pan>. This problem could I solve with typing the description for the albums new. But for pictures where I used some of these letters I still have the problem that I cannot access the files to edit the file information. The thumbnail do I see, but normal and original size wont work. For example http://gallery.don-duracell.de/thumbnails.php?album=17 with this picture http://gallery.don-duracell.de/displayimage.php?album=17&pos=0

Further I noticed thjat the speed of the gallery has become very slow (maybe because of this Version Check Thing), I don't know.

Link to the gallery is: http://gallery.don-duracell.de

delete the surplus deprecated language files from your old install inside the language folder (delete all files that are named "XXX-utf-8.php"). Make sure that you have successfully replaced all files as suggested - use versioncheck for this purpose. If you're not sure, post a screenshot where the versions are actually visible (condensed output!).
To solve the Umlaut issues, search the board - this has been discussed in detail in the past few days.

The "XXX-utf-8.php" files have are deleted. Files are all correctly uploaded. Had done this today again. But nothing changed. In versioncheck has nothing changed: http://www.don-duracell.de/pics/pic2.jpg

About the Umlaut issue, you mean this workaround? http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=24075.msg111088#msg111088

This is not the actual version info - the file versions are not being displayed, so I guess there's something fishy with your install. The version info page is suppossed to display the actual file versions, see http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#versioncheck_comparison_start

go without versioninfo.php then, just re-upload all files from the package - make sure that the ones on the server get overwritten. Your initial issue is that you have leftover files from the old version. Make sure to upload all files from the sub-folders as well, especially the include and sql subfolders. Make sure to run update.php and that your mysql user has got the needed permissions to execute all needed mysql-commands.

Ok, that's not so difficult. But how can I check if my mysql user has the right permissions?

How did you create the db user in the first place ? It needs CREATE and ALTER permissions, that's the most important thing.

For this öäåÄÖÅ problem it looks to be a mess.
They have decided that all langauge files from now and in the future shall be in utf-8 format and not in iso.

That is ok if 1. Alla visitors to your gallery have Auto-select in the coding of IE (not default in Sweden). 2. All mail clients have a n e-card sent to them are having mail clients that autodetect coding. (many do not)  3. You do not have a database containing old comments written in iso. If so when you switch coppermine will display OK but your old texts do not.

So my recommendation is. Copy your german.php up to your pc. Open it in notapad and save it as iso. And copy back.

And for the team. I do not think it's a good idea to use utf-8 . I think we must be able to decide.
