Title: Site Outage.
Post by: phill104 on January 11, 2014, 08:25:20 pm
As you may have noticed, Coppermine has been offline for the last couple of days and I shall hold my head in shame and take the blame. There were a number of things on our server that required updating so after 18 months without so much as a re-boot I decided that I should schedule some outage to re-image the server.

With all due diligence I took backups of everything both on my laptop and to an external memory stick in preparation with a plan to take final database backups after taking the forum offline. I did this on the 7th and begun the final stage on the 9th. After re-imaging the server I was called away to my day job. On arrival my laptop did a lemming impression bouncing 6 feet from a server rack killing the hard drive completely.

Once I had stopped panicking I knew that I had a full backup stored on a memory stick so I began to restore this. Unfortunately, the database on that backup was from the 7th so roughly 40hrs of forum posts were missing. Coupled with problems restoring the massive forum database of nearly 1Gb this led to an unfortunate delay in bringing things back online.

If you have lost anything in those missing hours I can only apologize. We are now back online and looking forward to the new year. We have a lot of plans for Coppermine along with some new and enthusiastic members of the development team. We would like to thank all of our users for their patience and hope we have not caused you too many problems.

Phill,
Thank you for all your efforts and the long hours working to recover the site / forums...

As anyone in IT (and other professions) knows - just further proof that "anything that can go wrong, will... At the worst possible moment..."

Hope you have caught up on your sleep (or are doing so now!)

(thanks to the others that helped too..)

Looking forward to a great year with Coppermine!

Greg
