Title: Competition: artists wanted (submissions)
Post by: Joachim Müller on December 13, 2005, 06:40:32 pm
We're currently trying to improve the content of the coppermine demo (http://coppermine-gallery.net/Obsolete). The goal is to have at least one file of every filetype that coppermine is pre-configured to display available on the demo page as well, and to have nice pics in it as well instead of the existing plain ones.
Therefor, we're asking photographers and artists to contribute pics, movies and other "coppermine" files that you would like to see on the demo. Of course they have to be owned by you (so don't upload files that you got from another site on the web, even if you believe they're public domain). To avoid legal issues with stolen pics, we will need proof that the contributed files are actually yours, so there will be checks.
The description of the files that get added to the demo will of course contain the name of the artist (that is you) and maybe a link to your homepage (if you wish so) - please fill in the needed description fields.
We can't accept nudity (even mild, artistic nudity) nor any other non-worksafe content, and of course the file-size must be small (especially for the movies) - the smaller, the better.
We can't offer any kind of reward or compensation except a lot of page impressions and your name and site being mentioned (a watermark would be OK as well). After all, it's a nice contribution and a good way to give something back to the community for the app.
Pics should preferably contain EXIF/IPTC data.

To upload any files, go to the competition album (http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/thumbnails.php?album=21) on the demo page. You will be able to upload your files there using the "upload files" link (you need to be logged in). Your files will be visible after admin approval.

Thanks in advance - I'm looking forward to your contributions.

File types we're particularly looking for are:
The video and audio files are just meant to be a proof of concept, so they should (for bandwidth reasons) only be low-res.

Pictures shouldn't be larger than 1024x768 (for bandwidth reasons). Please don't hotlink large images yet to this thread

Joachim

Here are my contributions, I hope some will make it to the demo!
All pictures taken by me march-april this year in Mexico.

Btw, AngelC, SaigonK and PYAP - I really like your pictures. Really nice and professional, makes me want to be a better photographer than I am. :)

<edit>Just realized the original post said attach using "Additional options", but now everyone has put images right in their posts, as have I as I can't attach more than three pics using "Additional options". Let me/us know if we should change it, remove the hotlinks, make multiple posts, or just limit contributions to three per person..</edit>

<edit2>Gah, I noticed I used the wrong action when resizing in Photoshop, so most of my pics do not have Exif info, but ofc I have the originals. So if you decide to use any of my images and that particular one doesn't have Exif info, please let me know and I'll fix a new one for you!</edit2>

Title: Re: Competition: artists wanted
Post by: Joachim Müller on December 16, 2005, 09:31:42 am
Some of my fellow dev team members have pointed out that it's a silly idea when you are promoting a web gallery script like coppermine with a competition to ask users to attach the files to their posting. Instead, I should have started an album on the demo that holds the files and allow user uploads. I apologize for being so dense - that's of course absolutely correct.
So I created such an album right now, giving upload permissions to all registered users and moved the pics that have been submitted so far directly in the posting to the album.
From now on, all who want to contribute should visit the album Artists wanted competition (http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/thumbnails.php?album=21) and upload their files to it using the "regular" coppermine controls - they will be visible after admin approval.
I went through the previous postings and edited them accordingly, as well as my first posting on this thread. Again, please excuse me for being a moron in the first place, I shouldn't have made this so complicated (should be much easier now).

Cheers

Joachim

hm, not sure what's wrong for you - I just tested (using a non-admin test user account), worked as expected. Other users like netfalls and claude258 where able to upload just fine. Can you post a screenshot of how the menu looks like for you on the demo? Also, check the cookie settings in your browser. Also, try accessing the upload screen directly by following this link: http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/upload.php

OK, it appears that being a member in the groups you're in keeps you from being capable to upload. I'll have to look into groups settings on the bridge.

Hi, I just uploaded a couple samples of my animation work in flash. I accedentally uploaded the wrong file on the seconds one, any way I or an admin can update it?

the file I meant to upload is the one inside this zip...

deleted yaotl02.swf. Would have been to large anyway, we need smaller files both in resoultion and size.
Title: Re: Competition: artists wanted
Post by: Ibis Fernandez on December 27, 2005, 07:32:34 am
ok thanks, well size is only 93kb

resolutionwise, it's a flash file to it can be set to to any size without loss of resolution.
like 720x405

One of the draw backs that I find with coppermine which I would like to see improvement on in the future is the ability to include a thumbnails during the actual upload process so that the generic ones dont have to be displayed. Yes i know that theres a work around via ftp, but thats not really a solution.

Also PHP has native functions for detecting the width and height of flash files, so it would be great to just upload the stuff without having to fill out so many fields. Just php do the work. Im pretty fond of thiscript overall, panning on making it an itegral part of flashfilmmaker.com
Title: Re: Competition: artists wanted
Post by: Ibis Fernandez on December 27, 2005, 07:54:26 am
What exactly are your size requirements? i noticed you deleted my other file too. Anyways. Just thought I'd help. Didnt think 90kb was that big a deal, its smaller than most regular images.
Title: Re: Competition: artists wanted
Post by: Joachim Müller on December 27, 2005, 08:43:30 am
the files both didn't work for me, so I guess you used a flash version I don't have - that's why I deleted them both. For backwards compatibility, files on the demo should be viewable by everyone, not only those with the most recent flash version.

Thanks for approving the low-res mp3 of my podcast!

It is nearly 30 mins long so I really had to crank down hard on the quality to fit the file size limits.

Should it stay in the main public upload (competition) album or the multi-media album with the audio files?

I haven't, we're looking for short tunes that show the capabilities of coppermine, a ten second snippet is all it takes to do that, preferably music instead of speech. Sorry.
