Post by: Travis on December 06, 2003, 05:41:23 am
I read through the list of requirements for this software (Web Server + PHP + MySQL + IM/GD) I have to ask what web hosting providers offer all these features?  What web hosts do all of you use to run CPG?

greatly depends on your location (this board is being visited by people from all over the world - I doubt you want to know about my german webhost unless you're from Germany as well).
The choice of webhosts also depends on other factors, hard to say what will fit your needs. Do some searching in your country, I'm sure there are pages decidacted to help you choose the right webhost for you.

Not to my knowledge, but the install is pretty darn simple.   Upload the package/unzip the package/read the docs/run the install script from a browser/.

Maybe someone should look into the feasibility of getting coppermine to work with fantastico and other cpanel like integrations?  Any volunteers?

Not sure if you are still looking or not but there is a free promotion going on for one company till the 21st

http://www.1and1.com  is offering 500 megs free for 3 years.  To every appearance I can find this appears legit.

Also if you are looking for a large host http://hostdime.com offers 3 gig reseller accounts for 30$ a month US which also includes a 3 gig account for the host doing the reselling  (6 gigs with 35 gig bandwidth for 30$ a month is a good deal IMHO)

I have personally used CPG for some time now and decided that I would offer it to my customers as part of a package along with forums and blogging software.

Our HomeUserPlus Package is priced at £6 per month and includes :

CPG, phpBB and Pivot. Each item may or may not be used, that is of course up to the client.

CGP forum members will receive 12 months for the price of 10. All you have to do is place an order for the HomeUserPlus Package and when you get the confirmation email, simply reply to it and mention this post. You will then only be invoiced for the price of 10 months.

Please note that this account however needs to be paid annually. If you have any questions feel free to PM me and I will reply to you as soon as I can.

if you're looking for webhosting and you're from Germany I strongly recommend to take a look at http://webhostlist.de/
They run a large database with comparisons of webhosts - helps you in the jungle that webhosting hs become in the past 2 years. They have user reviews, feature comparison, budget lists any many more options. The site is in German and only covers German webhosts.

Casper, thanks for the tip.
I'm Uploading my Entire site (keeping exactly the same structure), but it might take a while, well, i got 900 Pictures... i'll let you know if things went all right.

About the host.
It's: http://www.surpasshosting.com

It has a good plan (Standard) with:
- 2 GIG's of space.
- 3 GIG's of bandwidth.
- Cpanel (newest).
- Unlimited E-mails/Subdomains
- ImageMagik, GD.
- An Online community board from the users, wich helps a lot with "feedback" "tips" "programing" exchange... it's very usefull, maybe more than the Help Desk,

This plan costs U$48.00 (Yearly Payment).
Or U$4.98 (Monthly Payment).
And Yes, they do accept PayPal, 2CheckOut.
And you got a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee.
Well, it woth trying.

They got a cheaper plan, the LITE plan.
Just check it out.

And by the way, it has a great review from users at:
http://findmyhosting.com (here you can find lot's of "cheap" hostings also).

That's it.

Just correcting the information...
It's 30GIGAS of Bandwidth. (check the site).

By the way, if you gonna sign up for one package, and you don't mind in use my person as a referral... please, use "STEVEHU" as a Referral :)

I'm not part of SurpassHosting staff or getting paid to adverteise it in here...
I just think, besides "http://findmyhosting.com" reviews it's the best plan your "money" can pay. U$4.98 per month for 2GIGAS Space, 30GIGAS Bandwidth... it's amazing.

Cheers.

Please excuse me if my questions seem really stupid. I'm new to this and I've been reading through this board all day :?

Once I find a host with PHP and MySQL, where do I get GD or ImageMagick? Does my host need this or do I install it on my comp?

Can someone who is just learning how to design webpages use Coppermine or would recommend something else? I really want to use coppermine, it's the best photo album I've seen.

Your host should already have either GD or imagemagik installed already. You just need to know if it is GD1 or GD2, or if imgaemagik, the correct path to enter into the config.

Thanks for the information ... I did have a closer look on this host and it seems much beter then my current.

Anyone have experiences on hosting and domain names registered in USA, when the site is used and admined from Europe? Is there any problems? A credit card is needed, that's for sure.

From where can I found cheap domain registrations then?

My site is based on a US server (Haisoft.com), but is totally administered from the UK.  No problems that way.

But this 'surpasshosting.com' deal seems so good, I'm thinking of migrating when our year is up.

Intellii.com is another great host... I share an accoutn with my friend and it uses cpanel as well as fantastico so cpg can be instgalled we a name, password and three clicks. They hadnt updated fantastico in a while, but their customer service is great. I logged a support ticket and they answered within a couple of hours and didnt stop until the problem was solved.

its cheap, with unixc/linux hosting, windows hosting, dedicated servers as well as reseller plans.

Defencetalk.com's coppermine  is hosted at www.24hostingnow.com and they are WONDERFUL!

The installation is automated through fantastico (not to mention many other scripts in fantastico) plus if there are any problems with your database or even the scripts which if are the result of database malfuction, etc. they will fix it in a fly! Great support as well.

It is legit, though I hear some people get what they pay for (or don't pay lol) with lousy or non-existant support when problems arise.

I'd recommend anyone who has narrowed down their searches of potential hosts to do a search on Webhostingtalk.com to see what turns up. I've noticed that a few of the larger ones mentioned in this thread offering very cheap plans are constantly slammed by current and former clients for various issues.

Just to throw my hat in, I too offer hosting and have Coppermine 1.2.1 installable through a cpanel autoinstaller.

http://www.charlottezweb.com

Whoever you go with, I highly recommend researching them first on Webhostingtalk.  Just because there is negative feedback, it doesn't mean you shouldn't try them, but it's nice to know what you could be getting into.

I've been hosting all of my sites through netfirms for years now and they've recently added this photo gallery option ...they call it netfirmsphotogallery.. and don't really tell you anything about what you're getting... I went ahead and clicked to install it just to see what it was about and saw your link on the bottom page so here I am..I've been reading through this forum for 2 days now to try to learn as much as I can on my own, and still.... I'm clueless in so many areas.   I've never worked with php before, and didn't think I had that as an option with my hosting plan.. I love net firms, but I think they limit my powers with this gallery.

I can't even get my admin password...

When you go to 'agree' to the terms and conditions it says something to the affect of: the administrators at (and then there's no name) and I don't know how to fix it to make it my site's name..lol

Ok, there are lots more issues I'm running into that I'm sure belong in another area of this forum, so I'll leave it at this for now.

I guess maybe I needed to vent in a shot gun approach sort of way.  :-\\

Title: Re: Web Hosting for Coppermine photo Album?
Post by: Rachelle on June 22, 2004, 01:03:09 am
um..ok..not done venting...

I don't even know what version of coppermine I have through my host.. either they have failed  to supply the information, or I'm just blind as to where to look for it. ..grr!

And I could very well have infringed on some copywrite laws with the theme I'm using as it needed to be changed a little bit to suit my color schemes for the rest of my site.. (again, no information on what I'm allowed to do and not to do provided through my host).

Title: Re: Web Hosting for Coppermine photo Album?
Post by: hyperion on June 22, 2004, 02:56:10 am
They've done some fiddling with Coppermine, but it looks like you're getting the 1.2.1 version.  You can check this by looking on the config Console. Your admin password will be in your database users table (it is set at install). Anyway, don't be suprised if you find more little things, as there's no telling what they may have done to it.   See what you can learn from our documentation link.

PHP is an easy and powerful language, so I would suggest you pick up a book on it.  I suggest SAMs PHP, MySQL, and Apache for beginners.

I've got 1 GB and 15 GB data transfer a month for only $25.20 a YEAR! Included Cpanel unlimited databases. Only been with them for a week but haven't had any problems so far.
I live in Holland and the server is in the USA, can't say I notice a difference in speed with local hosting provider which are much more expensive.

I finally found www.firefuse.com hosting company and sent them an email about it host@firefuse.com.  They do really cheap hosting packages because their largely non-profit. Sort of by the people for the people hosting.

So now i have a really great server package with Image magik, cpanel, fantastico (installs coppermine and phpbb ect with one click on your server).

Great stuff
im on the bronzeplus package
$3.95/month = 500mb space, 10,000MB bandwidth, PHP, Perl, CGI, Cpanel, Image magic

But they also do Bronze for people who dont need the extra space (you can request more space)
$1.95/month = 200mb space 7,500MB bandwidth, PHP, perl, cpanel, image magic

By the way if you get a package here the path for IM is usr/local/bin/convert (i already asked).

So there you are homies. Bask in the delights. (Thought i'd give something back since ive been using this forum loads to get mods and support)

I will not mention the name of the company because I dont want to advertise. If anyone interested, pm me.

The company (Netdynamics) is in Greece and the server is in Miami, Florida, USA.

on this thread you're even encouraged to advertise, that's what the thread is for. Your posting is somewhat irrelevant if you don't tell people what webhost you're with, so I suggest you review your posting and add a link to your webhost. It's recommended that you post what country you're in as well...

Check out the options offered by InMotion Hosting - The Coppermine can be installed with one click and we even take the time to help our less experienced users get their Gallery setup how they like it.  GD2 and ImageMagik available.

Instructions include how to allow your Coppermine to accept huge uploads (we have a lot of photographers), switch easily to new themes, and, the most popular by far, uploading directly from XP's "Publish the Folder/File to Web"

Please come by and visit us - www.inmotionhosting.com (http://www.inmotionhosting.com)

We would be happy to help!  Send me a PM and I will get you $20 off any 12 months of hosting for the first year.

Thanks!

If you want really cheap shared web hosting then i recommend www.globedomain.com  You will get 250MB with 2.5GB Bandwidth per month for just $10.75 per year. Yes that's right $10.75 per year. Other features includes unlimited email accounts, unltd databases, unltd subdomains, unltd ftp accounts and much more. Coppermine works absolutely fine on their server.

My personal site www.abbasali.net is hosted on globedomain so you can check out the speed and other things regarding server. They give good support and generally responds to the query within 12 hours.

I won't say that they are the best web hosting providers but for $10.75 a year they are good.
Title: a good/coppermine compatible webhost?
Post by: colorwonderful on June 18, 2005, 04:37:47 am
i dont even know if this question would go here, im new to the forum and coppermine in general.. but.. I am going to purchase a domain name and need a webhost.. i am making a site with coppermine gallery. i know these are the minumum requirements:
(any webserver, Apache recommended (Coppermine has been reported to work with Apache, Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), Roxen WebServer, Abyss, JanaServer)
PHP 4.1.0 or better
GD lib or Image Magick
mySQL 3.23.23 or better (4.x recommended). Don't confuse the client api version (which is shown in phpinfo) with the mySQL version! )

can anyone recommend a webhost with these and decent prices/ and I am going to post a lot of photogtaphy, etc. so a good amount of space.  Please email me at sari938@aol.com if you know of a good host. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I use www.dataflame.com (http://www.dataflame.com) - reasonable prices, never had any downtime.... choose a package with a MySQL database on the Linux hosting.

I've been with BlackSun (www.blacksun.ca) for a few years.  This is my first webhosting 'experience' and it has been excellent in my opinion.  I've been running a PHP/MySQL guestbook and bulletin board for a few years and recently installed 2 other PHP/MySQL applications, Retrospect-GDS and Coppermine.  BlackSun's prices are reasonable and support is excellent (again, in my opinion).

My 2 cents...

I'm going to start providing Coppermine focused hosting myself as a reseller. The plan will be for up to 3GB space, 40GB bandwidth for $7 per month. This includes a proper Coppermine installation, bridging, security updates, personal email support and migrating your gallery from your current host. You'll get cPanel, FTP access, email and all the usual stuff. Email me (mail@ic-gallery.com) or use the board's messaging if you are interested or have any questions

PS. You'll be on the same server as my site (http://www.ic-gallery.com) if you want to check the speed.

Note: This is my own personal scheme and is in no way affiliated with the Coppermine dev team.  ;)

I have changed from a Windows Server based host to a Unix based one http://www.site5.com
# 3 GB Web Space
# 50 GB Bandwidth
# 5 Domain Pointers (Domains to a separate sub-directory)
# Unlimited MySQL Databases
# Unlimited E-mail Accounts
# Unlimited FTP Accounts
Costs $6.95 / month paid yearly.
I have sent two support requests and had replies within 10 minutes both solved.
 So far so good

Title: Web Hosting for Coppermine photo album - bad experience with EasyCGI
Post by: despecial on August 22, 2005, 12:59:34 am
I am looking for a provider to host my pictures gallery.
Currently this contains 2.500 images (and some movies - max 4Mb each - in total ± 1.2 Gb worth of files) and we are using the latest stable version of Coppermine.
Bandwith is ± 18 Gb per month (highest peak we had on one day = 1.2 Gb)
These images are from vacations we organise for a Belgian boyscout organisation - therefor the bandwith usage only reaches these volumes during July - August and September (experience from previous years) with small volumes during the other months. They will grow each year, but we only retain the best ones from the previous year.
We allow only a few people to upload through FTP & kids can upload single files through HTTP.
Acceptance is done by 1 or 2 people (batch approval) , which on the fly creates the thumbnail, the resized image and inject the necessary records in the MySQL db.

I previously was hosted by EasyCGI, but they more or less suspended my account declaring that I was using too much CPU (although they mentioned several different PHP processes - I believe they could not point out the real problem, if there was any)
They have provided me with the specs of the machine I was hosted on:
The computer is configured with 3.0Ghz Intel Xeon+ with 1GB RAM.    The Operating system is Microsoft Windows 2000 and we are running IIS5.0.
I believe a 2 - 3 Gb diskspace with 30 - 50Gb bandwith should be more than sufficient.

Any insights on choosing a good webhoster?

Thanks in advance & best regards

Pieter Van der Hulst

I use these guys.  Excellent rating, 24 hour live chat support, international hosting. $7.95 for 3GB with up to 50GB download/transfer bandwidth use. 500 email accounts. Lots more.  5 sub-domains.  1 free domain name.

In the US I am using http://www.godaddy.com

They have good prices Coppermine is what they call a "value added" application. You click a link and it is then set up for you automatically. I would of course recommend you check the version and update as needed.
Title: Re: Web Hosting for Coppermine photo Album?
Post by: Joachim Müller on June 14, 2006, 04:19:18 pm
There have been loads of issues with GoDaddy's value added application in relation with pre-made coppermine installs, that's what other godaddy users reported. The Coppermine dev team doesn't recommend using it. In fact, we don't recommend pre-installed versions at all, even if you update them afterwards. There's little point in having it pre-configured if you need to update it manually - a fresh install should be just as easy. This recommendation doesn't mean that we know or recommend (nor not recommend) signing up with godaddy - we simply don't know it. Don't use auto-installers though.

Title: godaddy and Server 2003 an impossibility
Post by: mbingham666 on August 22, 2006, 11:55:50 pm
I tried my butt off to install coppermine with a godaddy account running server 2003.  It came down to their little domain manager program not correctly setting file permissions, so I called godaddy tech support, and here's what I got.

"uhhhh, yeah....php is not at all compatible with Windows, dude you're going to have to switch to linux...."

i accidentally signed up for windows in the first place, and had been just too lazy to call them up and change, but that's a big bunch of BS if i've ever heard it, why can't you just tell me you're not up for helping me out.

anyway, i don't have that much on there to transfer so i'll resume my installation in a few hours, and i'm sure i'll have many questions.  i was just posting this because i've seen a couple of people have the same problem.... we'll see if i can get it up and running now.

Title: Re: godaddy and Server 2003 an impossibility
Post by: Joachim Müller on August 23, 2006, 06:15:05 am
Yeah, it's of course BS to say that PHP is not compatible to Windows server operating systems. However, I can recommend to switch to Linux-driven hosting anyway, as most webservers run that OS, and subsequently most permission-related issues in correlation to pre-made scripts like Coppermine are being explained in Linux-style (CHMOD).
Many webhosting newbies make that mistake: they think "hey, I know Windows pretty well as desktop operating system, and I have no idea about Linux at all". Subsequently, they decide for Windows-driven webhosting. This is just a wrong assumption, as you don't have nor need full control over the server operating system when webhosted. You don't need to know much about Linux when being web-hosted, except how the permissions work.
Of course there are some who actually need Windows-driven webhosting (basically if you want to run ASP-driven pages, need ActiveDirectory support or have developed Windows-driven executables that need to be run on a Windows server). Since this applies for a very small amount of people only, you should go for Linux/Unix driven webhosting.

I am running coppermine from a windows based server. They have php 5.03 installed which although not the latest is more than suitable, and although I had to access my domain with there server first to set the access rights before uploading any photos, I have subsequently had no trouble whatsoever.

Anyone who says php can not be run on a windows server is talking out of there proverbial butt. Permissions are a little more tricky to set, but once done leaves a system that will work just a stably as a linux based server. Looking back I kind of wish the guy who arranged this server had chosen linux hosting, I would have had access to Perl which could be useful, and there are other options my host provides which would have been very useful as well.

Linux is not the only option.

Check out http://www.mydomain.com

I recomment them thoroughly for there live support and consistent help.

I've been using Servage now for a few years and any problems I've had have been my own fault.

You can host any content with them as long as it is legal.

The specs were what interested me as they are huge for the price.

At the time of writing you get..

There are too many features to list.

The current cost of this host per month is £4.50 a month (approx €6.80), and you get extra months free for signing up for 12 months.

As a customer I obviously get a referral bonus, but the new customer does too, so everybody wins.
If you sign up using My Referral Code (http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust30144) then you get an extra 25GB (25000MB) of space free, so you'll have a monster 275GB website with a free .com for £4.50 a month (approx €6.80).

Enjoy.

Hi all,
I am using ixwebhostin located in KY. I like it a lot.  It is cheap and so far no problems.

ixwebhosting has "Web Shell 3" If you would like to find a good provider and you are a relative newbie look for this feature with your prospective host, I find "Web Shell" to be really helpful.

Web Shell displays your domain/directories. You can open individual folders and files, view the contents, rearrange the folders, and best of all edit the code right there. It also uploads/downloads. And lots of other things which I have yet to explore or have a need for.

I dont know if you have a mac or pc, but if this is of any relevance, many of these web hosts, particularly bluehost, do not care about Macs. If you have a Mac you cannot use many of their preinstalls incl coppermine and wordpress. You should ask the host specifically if this pertains to you. The point being - just because a host "has" something you want doesn't mean you will not run into problems with it.  Neither will they offer suport for what they provide "free" except possibly to check to see if your directory is properly structured or that server is working. A quick browse thru the boards here will assure anyone that my words are true  :(

Hope this is of some help,
klewless

Did you read the sticky thread "sub-board rules, read first! (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=8170.0)" on the sub-board "Looking for Freelancers / Paid help (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?board=30.0)"? Obviously not - you're not allowed to post ads here for webhosting - let me quote the corresponding section of the sub-board rules to you:
No advertizing for webhosting allowed
Please do not post new threads on this board to advertise for webhosting that comes bundled with coppermine installs or free support - in fact, don't start advert threads at all on this board. There are two threads on the "General discussion (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?board=12.0)" board that already deals with webhosting: Web Hosting for Coppermine photo Album (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=6021.0) and Free web host supporting the Copermine requirements (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=5721.0).

Failing to respect board rules won't make your webhosting offer more attractive to potential customers. ::)

Merging your thread that you posted on the wrong board with the thread mentioned in the sticky thread that I refered to above.

Title: Dedicated Servers Hosting Service with Tech Support
Post by: cgc0202 on December 21, 2007, 02:09:22 am
[I apologize to GauGau in advance but for some reason, I do not find a new post in this forum category, so I placed it here, the most related topic I could find.  If possible, move it as a new topic.  Thanks.]

I have many sites now where I have several dozen photogalleries (50 in one) that easily exceed and thus violate the very fine prints of existing bargain basement shared server accounts  (see note 1 below). After you add the CMS and other software for chat, forum, blogs the need for dedicated server becomes more imperative.

Anyway, for quite awhile now, I have been looking for dedicated hosting services  with tech support included.  More like higher end version of the shared server hosting services provided by some responders here (see note 1 below).

I am not concerned if the hosting service company is in the US, Germany or anywhere in Europe where very fast internet backbones are available.  Preferably, hosting services that would not consider photos of the Sistene chapel or art sculptures are violations of their TOS because there are nudes.  Things like that. I had an issue with Flickr on this (they did not ban my account by they threatened to ban me because I was defending others) during their censorship campaign.

If you know of any, or you are using  a dedicated server hosting now, please share your suggestion and actual link (if you have a site).  Please avoid suggesting one that you just found by Google search.  I have been doing that already.

Thanks.

Cornelio

Note 1:
Scams: There are some shared server hosting services provided here that I actually left because of very poor service. So, beware. The cheapest is not always the best.  And when it is too good to be true, most likely it is really not true.  Many  shared servers hosting services now advertise such crazy  stuff like 750Gb diskspace and 7.5Tb bandwidth for ridiculous prices less than $10 per monthn ($6-8 usually). Some are actually offering unlimited bandwidth

In contrast, a dedicated server will cost 80Gb diskspace and 750Gb bandwidth for $150 plus set up cost of as much as $50-150

Afaik you're German, so you should look for a webhoster from Germany. Nearly all major webhosts have their servers located near the internet backbone (like decix in Frankfurt/Main). I agree that budget webhosting is crap - you get what you pay for.
The mass hosters in Germany (Strato and 1&1) are (as the name suggests) mass hosters, so they're doing best at shared webhosting. I suggest taking a look at webhostlist or review the webhost tests performed by computer magazine c't (e.g. http://www.heise.de/ct/04/18/140/).
Personally, I'm hosted at Power-Netz (http://power-netz.de/).

A good web hosting company to run CPG is streamline.net if you get the Unlimited User Package (about £60 for 2 years) you get unlimited domain space (a previous client I managed to host 8Gb of files for movies with no probs) and visitor bandwidth, unlimited MySQL databases, good suport etc plus twenty subdomains. For example I run an entrance site at: concepts.org.uk with my gallery hosted at art.concepts.org.uk

Anyone new to web hosting should definitely check it out, but always make sure to look around and compare packages to see what suits you best :-)

Anyone new to web hosting should definitely check it out, but always make sure to look around and compare packages to see what suits you best :-)

I looked briefly at the offers of streamline.net, the diskspace usage allowed is rather low, and it is not clear exactly what the bandwidth allowed for each plan.  Then there is a fine print that states -- "we will refund your money in case your bandwidth usage exceeds our capability to support...", or something to that effect.  So, the use of the word "unlimited" this and that was used loosely.  More than likely, you are never going to be able to use your unlimited whatever because more than likely you will exceed their capability to support.  Of course that is just an opinion, and not based on any actual experience with the company.

There are so many extra charges for various features also at the end of each plan that are standard offers in most US shared server hosting services, or even dedicated server hosting services.  Maybe this practice -- a la carte -- is standard in the UK.

Anyway, some of the US hosting companies included in the recommendations here, I either reviewed or had experience to use them briefly. Sometimes, it looks good in paper but the reality never approximates what they offer.  I will not mention any of them here for legal reasons -- but beware, always read the fine prints.

My own current webhosting company used to be very good.  However, in an effort to stay competetive with similar companies in the US, they have adapted the policy of "promising the moon and the stars" to every new customer who still believes in fairy tales.  The result is a deterioration of the speed. I am looking therefore but the technical support of my current hosting service is still quite decent, compared to unsatisfactory support from my previous hosting service.

Hi Cornelio

I've ran with streamline.net for many years and not once had a problem, my old site http://subliminaldirections.org.uk was getting on average 1500 users per day with no affect to the sites speed etc. we used the SD site to try and test the limits of streamlines hosting plan and found we could host full length videos, multiple downloads etc. all in all we managed to host just over 20Gb of files without recieving any limitations, but I agree with you that you should always check the small print, just because I've never had a problem with streamline, it doesn't mean to say other peoples experience of streamline is positive.

Out of curiosity would everyone who has posted here be willing to score their webhosting company out of ten for various services on offer, as an example:

Hosting Plan: Streamline (Unlimited account) http://streamline.net/uu.php (http://streamline.net/uu.php)
Techinical Support: 8
Speed: 6
Web Space: 10
MySQL setup: 10 (no experience necessary)
MySQL limitations: 5 (only 10 databasses allowed)
Cost: 10
Ease of Use: 10 (Streamline provide an ftp service making CHMOD files etc very simple)
Overall Score: 8 out of 10

(I tried to set up Coppermine using 1and1, but it only allowed for smaller pictures; otherwise they're a good hosting company).

So, anyone know for sure a good quality host that will allow me to do as I want?

Hi guys,

I have read through the suggestions thus far and some of them I will take a look at but I wanted to ask your opinions for our situation.

Previously we were hosted by someone who took very good care of us (we were a bit spoiled I guess) and large sites and galleries were not an issue as we were always given space and bandwidth as needed. Some of our galleries have gotten up to well over 25,000 photos so as you can see they get pretty big and take up about 5gb-10gb when dealing with hq photos.

Recently a friend and I are trying our own attempt at making a network of sites and use google ads to try and recover the cost of server space, etc. Currently we are hosted by HostMonster who has promised us unlimited space and bandwidth which they can't seem to deliver as there fine print has a stipulation of using more than 5% of the cpu results in a temp ban for your site for a 5 minute time frame.

We are now at the point of using nearly 800GB of bandwidth this month alone and space wise we are up to about 30GB between about 10 sites on our account; from talking with various hosting options I have been told that many php / sql / cgi based scripts take up alot of server resources which is why the cheaper acts are not so good and in our case we are better off with VPS or a dedicated server.

Opinions on this? Do any of you think we really need a dedicated server or VPS solution? They are just so expensive and I know you get what you pay for but the idea of spending $75 - $120 / mo and losing half of our ad revenue to cover it is not sitting to well LOL. Now I am thinking we move the larger sites to VPS and keep the shared hosting (as its already pre-paid any how) for the starter sites and as they grow and get more and more visitors then we move them to the larger server.

Also 2 questions... #1 any way to cut down on the resources used by CPG (already disabled buddy lists, stats, etc which helped) and #2 do any of you have reccomendations for a good VPS solution that uses CPANEL and is not in the $50+/mo range but still gives a good amount of space and bandwidth? Or am I just dreaming thinking I will find one?

We mainly use wordpress, cpg, and smf along with a few other minor php scripts such as affitionality

when it comes to images and hosting, one should be careful with the web hosting provider.  most web hosting providers will not tolerate filling up the space with 20,000-30,000 images.  if your gallery is getting way too big consider getting a vps or semi dedicated server.  if you are just starting out, look into chime host (http://www.chimehost.com) for web hosting.  they offer good pricing and nice set of features.

semi dedicated server
What's that? Is it dedicated or not?

ok on shared web hosting server, you are sharing server resources with 100+ sites and that depends on the web hosting providers.  Semi dedicated can be a dedicated server with only 20 sites.  You pay more but you have more cpu power available.  You are not sharing cpu with 100+ users.   semi dedicated is good for folks that are not ready for dedicated server.  basically for a website, the transition phase involves shared web hosting --> semi dedicated web hosting --> vps server --> eventually dedicated server.  I guess vps and semi dedicated might fall in same category.  Only thing with vps is that you have to set everything up on your own (apache, mysql, php etc).  Semi dedicated is just like shared hosting but you just have more resources available.

Tecnically are shared servers. Is a tricky way of calling IMO. In fact they are not called "Semi dedicated servers" but Virtual Private Server. A VPS is when some hosting company does a partition of one computer server into multiples servers. They can have different OS, they can be rebooted one at a time, and they sell very expensive (IMO) for still being a shared sever, you share resources and that's what is all about. :)

I agree with Fabricio: calling shared webhosting "semi-dedicated" just because you put less presences on one physical server is just a marketing trick. The server is not dedicated to one task/user only, which is the meaning of a dedicated server. As Fabricio pointed out, virtualization is the next best thing to a true dedicated server in terms of a physical machine assigned to an account.
Of course it helps in terms of performance to put less presences on one physical machine, but adding to the confusion of newbies by using a buzzword like "semi-dedicated" is misleading.

Joachim

P.S. "Semi" is a latin prefix that stands for "half". Whoever coined the term "semi-dedicated" would need to have only two presences then on one physical machine, because two half servers equal one full server. That's why not only the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation will be the first against the wall, but a lot of other marketing people as well ;).

After wading through the many posts here, I want to ask the question differently:

What hosting company SPECIALIZES in CPG hosting and development?   Do they warrant security patches up to date, and plug the vulnerabilities to hacks?    My site is hosted on 1and1.com (good plan, cheap) but I keep getting hacked with cgi35.plala.or.jp/Mu/gwbbs/lock/eng/css.js and similar stuff.   I don't have the ability to harden the environment, etc. since it is shared.

My site is http://photoshack.com and it has a fair bit of traffic and 10-25 signups per day.   I don't make money off the site, so paying big $$ to keep it secure isn't going to work.

I would really like to migrate the site away from the current provider and into the hands of someone who is better at this.

thanks (in advance..)

You only get that type of hacking just because the hacker is a moron. I could easly take over your gallery in 5 minutes due to you're running a Coppermine version of 2 years ago. You should update as soon as we release a new version, 1.4.25 right now!

It's the first time I offer hosting in the forum because I'm not here to sell, anyways, I have some space in my reseller account due to yesterday I moved one website, if you PM me we could make some deal. I'm running my gallery without any problem and so thousands of people. This post is not meant to confuse you in order to sell you something, Coppermine should run very well in almost all the hosting services. (decent ones ;))

I appreciate it, I just can't spend $$ on something that doesn't at least cover the expenses and right now it does not.  Before this hosting plan I had to shut the site down since it maxed out my space/bandwidth.   I paid a developer to migrate the user accounts and images to the new site, and also make it so the adsense ads show up on the top and the display image pages.   Even though I get 300k page views, 54k unique visitors, average page views 5+ per visit I still make no money and can't cover the costs.

Getting help from developers like you would keep this thing alive.  I am not that technical, I'm a photographer!!!

I use 1and1 and have no problems. Have you contacted 1and1 about your problem (a bit off topic here, but always a good bet, they might even compensate you for troubles). Also, try adding a donation link to your website and setup a paypal account, you might not get much, but 1and1 is very inexpensive for webhosting...

Thanks, yes I have discussed the issues with 1and1; their margins are thin as you mention so there's no real chance a pro can spend time troubleshooting the security holes.  I have given up there.

And I had a paypal donation link for a long time and got NOTHING.  Gamers and kids don't have bank accounts even if they did want to pay for what they get for free on Photobucket (and they are the active users.)   I just exist because I'm free.

You can also register/buy the virtual ,Deticated server Hosting, web hosting with advanced features in the site http://www.tucktail.com/ at low price.

[Edit Joachim]
Split this posting from the thread that discusses free webhosting and merged it with paid webhosting thread. If you would have spent more time to read and understand, your advert might have attracted potential customers. As it stands now, it just looks like an attempt to increase the relevance of your page in terms of search engine friendliness, but it's not very likely that actual humans will visit your page using this link. A wasted opportunity if you ask me...

This is thre thread dedicated to paid webhosting. There is another sticky thread that deals with free webhosting that is (surprisingly) named Free web host supporting the Coppermine requirements (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,5721.0.html) and that resides within this very sub-board. Thanks for not cluttering boards in the future and for reading before posting blindly. We have little sympathy for laziness.
Title: Your web hosting provider?
Post by: 0zas on April 13, 2010, 02:17:43 pm
I apologize for the possible off-topic. Guys, could you tell me which web hosting company you are using at the moment? I have a problem because my current web hosting company hostrator.com is kicking me off. They say that our website is using too many server resources. But our website only gets 300 visitors per day..

Anyway, what would be your recommendations? Are you happy with your web hosting providers?

I am checking http://www.hosting24.com/ at the moment, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space?
I have contacted them and they say something like "1000GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will start running out of disk space we will simply add a new 1000GB drive so can continue uploading..".

What do you think about it? Any ideas and web hosting company name suggestions are much appreciated.

My sites are on US servers although my web host is in New Zealand!  http://www.kiwihosting.net.nz/
It truly is a flat world.

I installed ZenPhoto, CPG, and Gallery3 on my Windows 2003 server.
First impression favorite was ZenPhoto, but I found that it ran slow on IE8 - although it ran fine on Chrome and FireFox.
Gallery3 had some technical issues with the Windows server that I didn't have time for.

CPG was an easy install - ran perfectly and fast right out of the box - on a Windows server!
I've been with Kiwihosting.net.nz for perhaps five years. . .they don't overload shared servers either - websites have always run fast.
And never had a security issue with them. I'm a dedicated fan.

As for CPG, it is my gallery of choice.
The documentation is extensive - currently I'm customizing my theme and will have a link when it's ready.
As for the web host, http://www.kiwihosting.net.nz/ , I recommend them.  For a fact, I know one programmer in Amsterdam and one in Portugal that I highly respect that both use kiwihosting.net.nz

There are many krappy hosting companies and a few very good ones.
My 2 cents.
