The code that you're suppossed to edit doesn't reside in your custom theme. That's where the instructions of the orginal thread where not really easy to follow for newbies, however judging from your post count you can hardly be called a newbie, so you should have figured out by now how Coppermine's theme engine works: if instructions say that you need to modify a particular section in theme.php and that particular section doesn't even exist in your custom theme, you need to copy that section (and only that section) from themes/sample/theme.php into your custom theme's theme.php file, into a new line before the closing tag ?>.
This being said, here are the fool-proof instructions as far as the edits in theme.php are concerned: edit themes/yourtheme/theme.php, find$template_thumbnail_viewand edit as suggested below. If that section doesn't exist in your custom theme, copy// HTML template for thumbnails display
